I thought of giving Maxwell on linux a try. I don't about Gentoo, I'm a little afraid of the installtion. I managed to install Debian just fine though. What flavour is recommended? How about Ubuntu? The Server Edition or the Desktop Edition? I wouldn't like to fuss around for days and weeks.
Thanks
Best regards
Phil

Well. You'd better not consider Ubuntu or Fedora if speed is your first concern. I didn't try Debian.
They are not faster than Windows.
While Gentoo maybe best choice for rendering, nobody will recommend it if you are not used to Linux. The install procedure may drive you up the wall.

you said: not faster than windows... does this mean much slower or equal?
About Gentoo: yes that's what I was afraid off..
I know some Linux (Debian) but not enough to be willing to compile everything again and again...

I think the speed of Ubuntu is similar to that of Windows.
The good thing is Studio works in Ubuntu.
Maybe, Debian may be a little faster.

Are there any tricks to get it up and running on ubuntu, I installed it a little while ago and had all sorts of problems, Ubuntu installs glibc2.7 i think anyway I have to reinstall after a hard drive failure and the installation instructions for linux are pretty pathetic,I'm not a linux newb but yes i'm rusty and some more verbose installation instructions for customers would be most welcome if anyone has the time and patience,I might take minutes on my next install to see if anyone can pickup where i'm going wrong.
Cheers
Brett
