display contrast difference between Mac's and PC's?

I just got a new intel Mac and loaded XP onto it as well. I loaded Maxwell on the PC side to see if Studio was more stable on the PC side (an issue separate from this post).
Prior to ever seeing Maxwell run on a PC, I was always surprised how dark some of Maxwell's screens looked on the Mac. The contrast in the "studio look" always seemed very low. Rendered preview images in MXED always seemed dark too.
Then I started up Maxwell on the PC and everything came to life— the "studio look" had plenty of contrast.
I remembered playing with web design many years ago and reading about how Mac's and PC's display images with different intensity (maybe different gamma ranges?).
Is it possible the code is the same for both platforms and that explains the difference in the brightness/contrast between the two?
Am I the only one that notices this (maybe it is all in my head or eyes)?
(question also posted in the regular Maxwell thread...)
