The same error happened at first in my environment.
And, I could not use file-dialogs on studio.

I deleted a mouse driver of Logicool, because Dock ,Finder and file-Dialog didn't work normally

Thereafter the crash of m‾r studio decreased.
( windows, file-dialogs. )

//my env
( PowerMac Dual G5 2.7Ghz + Leopard10.5.1 + m‾r1.6rc3 studio )

I'm having what I think is the same problem which is driving me nuts. I can't assign, for instance HDR-files to my mxs file in Studio on a Mac. The first click i make in the file browser causes a crash of studio 99% of the time. The same happens whenever I try to use the file browser, whether it is to set a save image file name or just opening a new file (it almost never happens when I first open Studio and then choose to open a file but very very often when I already have an MXS-file open and want to open another). I always have to manually write the entire URL to the file in the URL text input where applicable to avoid this problem. It is impossible to work under these circumstances, especially since the SketchUp-plugin still doesn't have support for instances and is a memory hog when exporting scenes sp I have to export parts and use Studio to combine them, so Maxwell is still not very usable to me.

My suggestion is that you declare a feature freeze and only focus on fixing bugs for a couple of months, kind of what Microsoft was finally forced to do.

Please respond NextLimit and don't be silent as usual. Help me find the solution to this problem. What steps do you want me to take in order to help you find this bug?

Sincerely,

Johan Israelsson

So is this happening for you on Leopard or 10.5.2?

I am crashing as well on 10.5.2 when selecting an HDR file for image based lighting. it is about 50% of the time that it happens, so I try to save once I get it to work.

I also am having crashes in studio. Brand new octo mac, clean install of all software.

Crashes when navigating file paths. Also can not launch MXCL, hit render and files are written but no launch of the application.

NOT GOOD

Yes 10.5.2 and also on 10.5.1 before that. And as far as my recollection goes it has also been the case in 10.4.X (can't remember what the final number was before going to Leopard). i can't remember it ever having worked since I bought a new iMac in october 2007.

Yes the HDRI browsing seems to me to be the most vulnerable. However the setting of save file is a close second. In the HDRI case you have some sort of automatic checking of the URL as when I write the final letter of the complete file url it immediately appears in the 3D-view, without me even tabbing out of the input field. This seems like overkill an should be a possible cause.

I have also found that opening the Preview Options in MXED is also to invite a crash. Not always but often.

Anyone having any theories? Or the same troubles? Maybe I should try a complete reinstall of everything from the OS to all software, but I'm hesitating since i would probably take the better part of a day.

Hello Johan:

While I have no theories I share your frustration over the bugs and instability.

I recently got a new intel mac with osx 10.5.2 and launching mxcl with multilight from formz plugin stopped working (it was working in osx10.4).

While users and Maxwell staff helped find a work around, I would still hope to track down why it happens and see the problems fixed.

I to find Studio unstable and often get crashes when navigating to locations or files.

It would be great if development focused on stability and bugs instead of features.

Love the software— hope to see it improve.

Gary

same here on OS X 10.5.2

studio crashes constantly, this is very annoying and counter productive.

using new penryn based mac pro, 2.8Ghz, 10Gb RAM, OS X 10.5.2 fresh install. Doing virtually anything in studio causes crashing. I can email you console logs if it helps resolve this.

I hope guys can release a patch soon, and then a 64bit native version !! (I know this is lots of work! )

Agreed, Studio is very, very fragile in OSX. Occasionally it just crashes when you move the mouse over a text box. It is by far the least stable piece of software I have ever used over the last 15 years of computing.

so far no big problems here, but i've had a tip from the formz developers that certain frameworks, namely the xerces framework, which is installed by google sketchup, may be source of instability and issues with file dialogs in different applications. this is an apple leopard issue so far, at least that's what the developers told me.

i cannot guarantee if this will help, but you can try this: simply look in your library/frameworks folder if there is such a framework and try if removing this does increase stability.

i have resolved massive file dialog problems with formz this way, maybe this could help with maxwell, too?

sure, no solution if you need to work with sketchup day by day...

cheers

That's a really interesting piece of information. Unfortunately, as you said it wont be a solution for me since I use SketchUp daily. Do you know if it is possible to just temporarily remove the framework and then use Studio and then put the framwork back, or would you need to reinstall and/or log in/out or restart the computer? Maybe one could write an AppleScript to temporarily disable the framework when opening Studio.

When I get some more time I must investigate this further. Thanks!

Just had a Studio crash while I was sitting motionless looking at the screen, doing nothing at all, so I thought I'd check in. No Xerces framework installed on my machine...
