Memory limit

I need to get some more RAM for my 8 core MacPro. What is Maxwell's MAXIMUM memory footprint before it crashes? Seems like 3GB was mentioned somewhere in the forum.

Also, will it always crash when maximum ram is near or might it just render poorly?
