I don't think this is an issue of being able to mount a share - it is a problem with network naming.
Maxwell embeds file paths in the MXS file following the Universal Naming Convention. I have not found a way to allow linux or OSX to read this naming convention (I would love to know if there is a way).
With the MAX plugin I have tried unsuccessfuly to use URLs to point to files - the plugin just won't accept them.
The only work-around I've found is to place the texture files in the working directory and rename them using the format ""\\mainserver\blalblalba\1.tga".

my preferred way of achieving this would be to install Samba, mount the Samba share as a 'texture' drive under Windows and then move all your textures to the linux server.
hope this helps!
