Help!

Hi all,

I've taken a long break from Maxwell what with all the recent turmoil, but I took the plunge and downloaded RC5 last week. However, I can't open a single file other than the Next Limit office demo. Obj files just crash studio completely or open as empty files. 3ds and dxf files just open as garbage.

Since I'm using FormZ then at the moment I don't have a working plug-in that will bypass studio for me. So I'm stuck (other than going back to the old Beta).

Are all Mac users having the same problems with the exception of the lucky ones who now have plug-ins?

Cheers,

Nik

Have you made sure all the polygons are Triangles.
Lightwave is not fully working, maybe try using a free piece of softwave call UVX and export and ".obj" from there then bring that into mxSTUDIO.

Get back and lets us know what happens.

All the best

Yup, all polygons are definitley triangles. I've tried exporting from both FormZ on my mac and Rhino on my PC and I still haven't got a single file to work. I've also tried models that I've bought which were modelled in Max.

I'll give UVX a try later on tonight.

Cheers,

Nik

Hello Nik,

Please do not quote me on this.
But I think that Next Limit are aware that exporting from FormZ an ".obj" file does not work.
Contact them to confirm this.

I was having a similar situation with Lightwave.

Keep up the good hunt...

Nik,
I had similar problems (no new plugin for FormZ Mac yet), so I got around it by installing FormZ on an old dell PC and exported to mxi from there. Moved it back to the Mac and rendered from there. No preview in maxwell render (mac) is a pain.

It works

It does work with formZ and actually pretty well (athough workflow sucks for now).

Try this, hopefully you are lucky as me.
I activate the following buttons at the export options of .obj:

Platform: MS-DOS
Grouping Method: By Object
Facetted: As Faces
Smooth: As Facetted
Controlled Objects: As Plain Objects
Visible Layers on
Decomposition tick all
Triangulate options: Triangulate all faces
Attributes tick all
Obj Options tick

Then it works perfectly with me, no matter how complex the model (formZ 5.5.1 OSX.4.3 PB G4 1.5 GHz)
Had some good results with the renderings also already, despite the missing plug-in

Uki, you are a true legend! I had tried most of the obj export settings, but not the combination that you give in your post. I'll do a bit of testing to find out which settings are critical and post the results. Thanks again.
