my preferred way of achieving this would be to install Samba, mount the Samba share as a 'texture' drive under Windows and then move all your textures to the linux server.

I don't think this is an issue of being able to mount a share - it is a problem with network naming.

Maxwell embeds file paths in the MXS file following the Universal Naming Convention. I have not found a way to allow linux or OSX to read this naming convention (I would love to know if there is a way).

With the MAX plugin I have tried unsuccessfuly to use URLs to point to files - the plugin just won't accept them.

The only work-around I've found is to place the texture files in the working directory and rename them using the format ""\\mainserver\blalblalba\1.tga".
