Some basic questions in regards to being efficient.

I have some projects due that I wanted to have printed on 11 by 17 in paper (tabloid).
I dont want to take up the whole page with one image but want to divide the entire page into 6 sections.
Maybe 5.5 inches by 3.5 inches
What size should i render my products at..?? at the moment i do 1600 x 1200 this is too big and time comsuming right??
Doing a smaller size will save me time right???
The reason i am asking is because unlike the the rolling stones song... time is not on my side
