OK, and to answer the first question, I have searched for this.

I have been informed the best method of assigning materials is to do so in sketchup but, I am having a hard time finding a way to sort the wheat from the chaffe in order to find materials I can use within the sketchup materials palette.

Really going into basics but the video stuff is not much use to me to be honest, I would prefer les blarney and more instruction.

Create a sketchup material with a colour, but no texture and then assign it an mxm material reference in the Maxwell Scene Manager. There will be an MXM button in the top right and you can load a pre-made MXM material from there.

To get your texture map into Sketchup, click the right hand square box at the top right of the Maxwell Scene Manager after you have loaded an MXM... This assigns the main mxm texture to your sketchup material. The final step is to change the tiling size in the sketchup material, by typing in a physical dimension. The texture should show up in your viewport.
