How can I get a better benchmark? Similar systems are performing significantly better. Besides adding memory, what is the difference?

Benchmark Scores:

127 Intel R Core TM i7-5960X CPU 3.00GHz 4m38s 1002.85 16 15 GB 3.1.1.0 Win64 sure.
143 Intel R Core TM i7-5960X CPU 3.00GHz 4m54s 948.36 16 63 GB 3.1.1.0 Win64 Aniki
1144 Intel R Core TM i7-5960X CPU 3.00GHz 27m00s 172.35 16 14 GB 3.2.0.0 Win64 stanfordr

definitely something wrong here, your score should be about +-10% of the entries with identical CPU. (some of the top of list scores are pretty erratic though)

did you run the benchmark several times? if so and the result is always similar I would closely observe the task manager(or such on non win OS) to see if another process is consuming cpu cycles; also check your cpu temp.. not to imply anything, but I know some of my colleagues never clean their cpu/gpus before the thermal breakdown becomes reality :) (the cpu throttles down in such case)

The system is brand new (3 days old) and was intended to be a rendering node, so the only software on the system is Window 7 pro and Maxwell. There is literally nothing running in the background on this system.

I performed several benchmarks with similar results.

However, I haven't checked the cpu temp.

Here are the full specs

The benchwell list is completely messed up. The two examples above are clearly overclocked. I think the result of a non overclocked 5960X should be somewhere around 5m50s, BM795.
But nevertheless your values are definitely much too low.
You could use Coretemp and CPU-Z to check your values

btw.

The cpu temp is fine, it is running cool according to the cpu monitoring gadget. The system has liquid cooling fans, so I can't imagine it getting hot. When I monitor the CPU during rendering, the cores are running between 20-100% capacity. Any ideas?

Even worse benchmark scores

If you have not yet, try other benchmarks like cinebench or burn-in tools like prime95 to see if it is only a maxwell issue.

if the machine is new and stable but "only" slow in any application, return it.

if it is only slow in maxwell.. no clue!

Really? Are you sure? Who would build a cluster with quad core nodes? The E3-1270 has ~BM410, so this would be ~13 nodes to get this score.
Maybe the normal desktops of an office networked. But is it possible to submit network scores?
