but it is (according to task mngr). however now suddenly when I'm working with maya (2014) and send a scene to render from maya, all my computer becomes slowwwwww. as if something is taking all resources. did I accidentally changed something? how can I check it? thanks.

I'm not sure this is on the plug-in side, so I've moved it to the main forum. Please provide some more details if you can. Does it happen all the time, or only on a specific scene? Is Maxwell using a lot of memory when this happens? Does the computer become responsive again immediately after you stop the render, or does it take a while to "recover"?

happens with all scenes, even small ones. PC has 16 GB and quadro k2000d. i7. only happens when launching a render from maya - starting stand alone is as usual.

Did anything else change aside from installing the latest plug-in and Maxwell? Are you still using the same Windows and Maya versions as before? I haven't touched the priority settings and render launching code in a long time, so I don't see what could be causing this.

Do you have any other DCC apps that Maxwell supports, such as Max, Cinema4D etc? If you do, please check if the same thing happens when starting Maxwell from there.

I use older stuff (I'm on 2.7 with maya 2014) on win 7.
I did tried to change the threads FIRE uses but set it back to 0.
nothing other than that...really strange.

...this sounds familiar:

close FIRE! and launch a render!

...does it work?
