Flip Y

Hey,
a question I ask myself for years.
Why in Maxwell Studio,
Flip Y is enable by default for normal map? (in texture picker)
Its a openGL configuration, but :
> nvidia normal map filter (photoshop) > DirectX
> Adobe normal map filter (photoshop CC) > DirectX
> Substance Designer normal map node (default) > DirectX

Ok, thank Tom.
All my program make directX normal (Y in the other direction),
so i must disable Y everytime i make a normal map.
This is why I asked the question, just curious.
Thank!

I am not sure which one is popular. In the past, I've realized the freely available seamless normal maps on the web have their Y usually flipped. If you think the opposite is more common we also need to have opinion of other users.

Not sure too.
Maybe just a default configuration in the preferences.

Which application do you use for generating normal maps?

The nvidia plug,
(adobe plug is not as accurate), but mainly Substance Designer.
I also work with zbrush, but i use Substance Designer for the baking.
I have not yet used Substance Painter but he has also DirectX normal.
Of course, in all this applications you can flip Y,
but it's not the default setting and not very convenient.

The nvidia plug (and most apps) are using flip-y by default.
'directX' has nothing to do with normal maps at all.

strange, my nvidia default setting is Y disable.
for the format, there is no conventional name :
I dont try to impose anything, just talking about my experience.

eric nixon wrote:'directX' has nothing to do with normal maps at all.

He says;
DirectX uses +Y
OpenGL uses -Y
Internally we use DirectX but offer flipped Y by default which makes it an OpenGL normal. We could probably add this to general preferences and uncheck Flip-Y by default, but this would affect previously saved scenes and makes everything more complicated for the users. Instead, you can switch to OpenGL (Flipped Y) on export and save the community. Thanks!

I meant the nvidia plugin for photoshop, the thing is 99% of maps I see everywhere are using flip-y, so this has become/is the standard.

Seriously, why don't you simply switch to OpenGL in your application once and use them right away?

Any way, I need to flip in one of them.
I use a lot Substance Designer and its the default setting.
It was just curiosity at the beginning, I have not posted in the Wish List section
