Texturing after 3DS or OBJ import to Studio

Hi all,
I have bought 3D models that are available various formats e.g. 3DS, OBJ etc. They come supplied with textures but these are not in mxm format.
Ideally I want to open these in Maxwell Studio and save them for use as MXS references in SketchUp*.
When I open files of various type in Studio, the geometry appears as expected and the files open very quickly. However, the texture mapping has been lost and this is a problem.
Is there a series of steps I can follow in order to create mxm materials from the supplied textures and remap these to the geometry as per the originals?
*I can import OBJ files directly into SketchUp (using the Sim Lab importer) and in general textures are mapped but this is time consuming (as SketchUP isn't that great at geometry and it simply can't handle larger files) and the models import rotated through 90 degrees so there is a degree of processing that I am looking to avoid.
Hope somebody out there can help. Thank you.
