Updating a Rendering

If I have started a rendering and see a material I want to change, can I stop the rendering, edit the material, and resume the render from where it left off but with the new material?
Or does the rendering have to start over from the beginning when I do that?

You will have to start over in this case. Such is the way of things sometimes....
