Woh knows a fast render milkglass?

Hey There,

Im looking for a material like milkglass like that:

Does anybody know a material like that witch is fast to render for exterior renders for rails or so? Or is there only the way to make it with Glas or sss?

You can start with the Transparent > Frosted Clear Glass preset first or convert it to advanced material and play with the BSDF roughness.

I think there is only one way to get a good result. Frozen Glass with Coating for Reflection.

But for a big building structure it will be hard to render. Does anybody know a trick to do that?

I try to aviod using real glass in exterior renderings and use AGS cause of caustics calculation. I think it is hard to Render when to all rails are made with frozen glass.

I use a mxm very similar to the one deep__dive has posted. I usually render twice the size I need and shrink afterwards which gives me a lot of pleasure noisewise. :)

got ya. As Fernando said, I sometimes render at higher res, deal with the noise there and scale down after. I cant really think of an AGS solution

This setup renders quickly and can handle sunlight (but not so quickly), reflection is on seperate geo, it worked in maxwell V1, I need to test in V3/V2.

Its not spreading the light quite right, I did these a long time ago, and need to update the settings based on newer knowledge...

Personal tests, not commercial project/s.

EDIT: This technique relied on maxwell coatings being one-sided, which they no longer are, but now there is a backface option to use instead, just wondering if a backface material setup would remove the need for the reflection geometry layer (positioned just above the glass in these renders)

I have a project this week using frosted glass, I will test it in MW3..

The basic idea is that the glass itself has no reflectance at all, the glass is lambert roughness, but roughness 88 is fine for scenes without sharp lighting.

Then the spec is faked with a copy of the object which is slightly larger using an 'AGS' type material, which i also exclude from gi, and finally I think that removing the spec from the inner surface of the ags object also offers a speed-up. So in mw3 I am using the backface option to make the inner surface invisible.

Its worth mentioning that the best way to adjust the look, is to change the thickness of the glass geo. Also adjusting the nd 1.3-1.8 gives different looks.
