resuming render... different MXS path

My client wants to continue rendering scenes that I set up.
I understand I need to send him the MXI for the render and the unchanged MXS file.
Is there any way to specify a different path to the MXS file? Or does he need to match my exact directory structure?

No. When you open the mxs you will see the original output path for image and mxi and you can change them as you like. If maxwell detects a mxi that can be resumed at this location you'll be asked if you want to resume it or overwrite it with a new file.

I must be missing something here. Sorry I'm probably doing something really dumb.
When I open the MXS and then point it to the new path to the existing MXI file that's at (for example) SL 14. Renderer prompts me to overwrite the MXI. Then I push render, it prompts me to resume, I press resume, and then starts rendering from 0.
If I open the MXI then point it at the scene MXS file and hit render it prompts me to resume, I pick resume, then it starts rendering at SL 0.
