caustics issue

hi guys, I have a problem I have been fiddling with for the whole weekend, but since I found no answer elswhere, I am trying the forum.

I am doing renders for a diploma project for a friend of mine and have issues creating good caustics.

In the image attached you can see the scene I am doing. The big red rectangle on the right should be a tiny pool on the cealing, around 10 cm high. She would like to have the caustics efect spread as much as possible on the right side of the image.

I have tried all the materials in the material gallery, and around 20 different options with maxwell sea. I am working in Sketchup, but have the full suite licence, so if anybody wants to take a look, I have uploaded the mxs file to this link:

https://www.sendspace.com/

any help would be greatly apreciated,

cheers

I tried to achieve that effect once.
It worked really fine with a small surface reflecting the sun caustics, but with larger elements as a pool I did not get it to work with a reasonable amount of rendering time. So I faked it in Photoshop in the end :)

Using a water plane with some bump at water level should do the job. But, if you don't want water to look like a hollow object I think the scheme of face normals should be something like this:

Probably real glass will look better instead of AGS. It will also produce some more noise though.

I tried it with metal for my tests, to have more caustics created. But as I wrote, I wasn't able to make it work with a large surface (= waterfront in front of the building). But maybe for a pool it could work like that!
You could even create a maxwell sea for the reflection, right?
