URGENT LICENCE PROBLEM

Sorry for the double post but I have a major problem today.

I have had the same problem as many of you in having to revalidate my licence but it was just a minor pain until today so I was awaiting an update to fix it like all of us. Today when I tried to revalidate I received the error "The licence is correct but data cannot be validated".

It's Saturday, I'm in the UK and I have clients in the US awaiting renders who've come into work specifically to see my results. WTF can I do?

Can't connect to the customer gateway (which I guess is related to the validation problem) so I've posted to the support area but God knows how long that will take (business hours Monday to Thursday?!). I'm right up s**t creek today. Could be my first and last job for a major blue chip client.

Do you mean that you got disconnected from the RLM server, and Maxwell was asking you to relicense it? In that case you don't have to revalidate and recreate your license file each time. The license file is still on your computer, it's just that either the RLM server is down or something is blocking it from communicating with Maxwell, so Maxwell says it's unlicensed.

So in these cases, you don't have to go through the process of revalidating and recreating an already valid license file. You should instead check if the RLM server is running properly.

Been very busy this weekend so only just revisiting this. I guess you offered some help there before your edit, photomg1 but I didn't see it - thanks for trying!

Mihai, thanks for the tip. Have to say I'm finding the new licensing a bit of a pain, is this re-licencing thing not a bug then? I had to dig into the troubleshooting section to find the way to access the RLM sever page. Now that I know that, I'll try restarting the server from the webpage next time but really - is that how it's going to be using Maxwell from now on?

No it shouldn't :) People having these intermittent licensing issues because of the RLM server crashing for some reason are in a small minority. You can also try to install the latest RLM server from their website, see this post from Miguel:

http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... 08#p378308

If the licensing window pops up again when you start Maxwell the first thing you should do is check if the rlm server is still running (details in the docs).

It's done it again today so I went to the webpage at http://localhost:5054/home.asp to reset the RLM server but that didn't help. Here's the debug. It seems to see a licence file but it tells me I need to revalidate when I launch from Cinema 4D:

03/11 10:30 (rlm) RLM License Server Version 10.1BL2

Copyright (C) 2006-2013, Reprise Software, Inc. All rights reserved.

03/11 10:30 (rlm) License server started on Rich-Master.local
03/11 10:30 (rlm) Server architecture: x64_m1
03/11 10:30 (rlm) License files:
03/11 10:30 (rlm) /Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses/maxwell_suite_floating.lic
03/11 10:30 (rlm)
03/11 10:30 (rlm) Web server starting on port 5054
03/11 10:30 (rlm) Using TCP/IP port 5053
03/11 10:30 (rlm) ... adding UDP/IP port 5053
03/11 10:30 (rlm) Starting ISV server nextlimit on port 49152
03/11 13:15 (rlm) Reread request (for everyone) by webuser@localhost
03/11 13:15 (rlm) Sending reread msg to nextlimit (pid: 226)
03/11 13:15 (rlm) Starting any new ISV servers...

I paid a visit to the pages mentioned but the download for OSX doesn't contain any sort of installer that I understand. I'm sorry if I'm being a dummy. I'm sure it's better for you guys and I respect your desire to protect your IP but I much preferred the old system.

So this is happening on the same computer where the RLM server is running? When you revalidate the license, which option do you choose, second or third? When you revalidate the license, all it's doing is resaving the exact same maxwell_suite_floating.lic file, or maxwell_license.lic file on your computer, depending on which licensing option you choose. So the first thing you should do is browse to localhost:5054 like you did, but click the Status button from the left hand side, and check if the ISV nextlimit server is running.

Find a file called maxwell_license.lic, what does it say for the hostname? (HOST xxxxxxx ANY 5053) Is it the name of the computer? Or is it an IP? Does your IP change?

Do you have any AV that may be interfering with RLM?

The thing you should understand here is that the problem is not with the license files, but either Maxwell or the plugin not being able to contact the RLM server. So either something is making RLM crash, which doesn't seem to be the case, or some app is blocking it, or maybe if instead of the hostname you used an IP, that IP keeps changing.

Try this troubleshooting step from the docs to see if the hostname is really correct on your computer:

"Problem: I'm still getting the licensing pop-up, even though the licensing went fine and it saved my license file correctly"

http://support.nextlimit.com/display/mx ... leshooting

Check "Solution 3" there which is for OSX users.

We didn't do this for our "protection" really, we changed it because licensing via the old system was very awkward and limited for people running render farms (even smaller ones) or schools etc. that needed a centralized system for handling licenses, disabling them when they wanted, disable them at a certain time of day and so on.
