It doesn't support adding coatings to coatings. But of course you can use a single coating and add many BSDF to it without losing its appearance.

Please rephrase that Its hard to understand. Are there any limitations needed to keep additive layer/s + coating looking correct? What are da rulez?

I just did a test, and found that the way you said is good is actually bad, maybe a mix-up? Anyway I'm relieved because Its a lot easier/logical to build materials with the coating always on the top-most additive layer.
In other words the most intuitive way is the way its working, ^ as shown in the post above ^ so all the spec is in one bsdf+coating sharing the same bump map.

A coating should work in both ways. Tell us more how is it failing when it's bottom...

I build materials from the base up. Which seems the logical way. Coating on top layer. Is this workflow wrong?
Seems very odd to me having coating on the bottom layer. Unless you are working as the top layer is the base!?

I think tom wanted to say, it doesn't matter where the coating is, just as long as you are using only one coating.

Ok, here is a recreation of that (very basic) test;
Image on the left is fail, no? The only difference between the mxm's is that the coating has been moved to the top layer. The lower dark bsdf has roughness 96 and no bump map.

Actually, it's not expected to fail when used at the bottom but, obviously it looks like we have such a coating order limitation in the recent additive-fix. Thanks for pointing this out Eric!

Could it be that the preview is using draft render engine instead of production one?

“In terms of web-based entertainment, journalism, and personal opinion pieces, creators now outnumber consumers by a factor of several hundred thousand percent—meaning that for every one viewer, there are dozens of fully staffed companies churning out articles, videos, blogs, vlogs, and countless social media posts hoping to lure that person to click,” said bureau commissioner Erica Groshen, adding that during each minute of online video streamed by a consumer, another whole lifetime’s worth of video content is uploaded.
“Furthermore, our analysis found that the massive increase in internet usage over the past two decades was due almost entirely to people going online to publish text or images they themselves had produced and then repeatedly hitting the refresh button to see if anyone else has looked at their work.”
