Colormanagement issues

I try to establish a color management workflow including my Maxwell Render.
1. If I load .PNG files with ProPhoto RGB that have a gamma value @ 1.8 it is not interpreted by the renderer. So I have to load an image with RGB profiles @ gamma 2.2
2. When I render to ProPhoto RGB the 3ds Max plugin is default set to gamma 2.2 and in the Renderer it's 1.8 at default
3. The MW Render Preview and the full Preview (not the one emulated via GPU) show wrong colors that are worlds apart from what is output to the .PNG (I do save my renders to 16bit by Hand) This is very critical if I need to match real images content / colors.
Do you have any recommendations for me what file formats to use actually to come up with a production ready workflow.
I have a calibrated EIZO with deltaE of ~0.5 to work with so that should not be an issue.
