Enable Fast Multilight Preview crash

Hello everybody,

I can't enable the Fast Multilight preview option, it crashes every time as soon as I check the box in the preferences.
I have a AMD FirePro V4900 graphics card.
Anyone out there with the same problem or a solution?
Thank you.

Can you check please if it happens with any MXI file? Just create a default scene in Studio, with a cube and 640x480 resolution, physical sky, and enabling multilight.

Your card has 1GB of RAM?

Yes it also happens with a default scene. Even when I just start up Maxwell Render (without scene to render).
The card has 1GB Ram. I'm using windows 7 64bit.

My case is ok to run physical sky, and enabling multilight, the crash is on running diffraction, my dispaly card have 3g ram, mxi is 3000 x 2000 px, thx!

same on my machine, quadro 4000 2GB.

iso works ok up to about 4000x2000 with a single layer, but diffraction/scattering disables fastML.

which is strange as when i track gpu memory usage it never uses up more than 1GB but maybe there are stages in the calculation that are not reflected in vRAM usage if the calcultaion would be unsuccessfull.

what I do ATM is export 32 bit, resample in PS reimport, adjust, and then apply the settings to the full frame.

You do realize you can turn the feature off?

So by crashing, you mean Maxwell itself crashes? Or that Fast ML turns itself off?

l1407 (if that IS your real name! ) so with a smaller sized MXI, does diffraction/scattering work ok for you?

Strange things are happening. I tried to turn on the Fast Multilight Preview again today and somehow it worked. Since I couldn't believe that the problem resolved itself I unchecked it and then turned it back on again, and this time it crashed like before.
Following that an bigger problem now occurs, Maxwell (render) won't even start up anymore. It just crashes.
I've included a link to a youtube video from my iphone of the current crash situation (I don't now how to make video screen grabs).
I'll try to reinstall everything to hopefully get the possibility to render back at least.

Re-installing didn't help.
Maxwell render is still crashing upon start up and I'm unable to render anything..
Studio is working fine.
I truly hope there's a solution for this cause I'm pretty stuck right now.

I try a smaller sized MXI, the problem is same. The crash is auto exit Maxwell render.

and ocz l1407 isn't my real name (My name is Bond)

Simulens (scatterint and/or diffraction) demands a lot of gpu memory. Doing simulens + fast ml edition with 3000x2000 images probably don't work due graphics cards memory allocation and buffer size restrictions, even with enough memory available.

Anyway, the main problem here is that some cards can handle bad memory allocations without problems (so maxwell can just disable simulens automatically, or disable fast ml if mxi lights doesn't fit in gpu memory), but there are graphics cards that manage that memory allocation errors bad and can crash the driver (not even maxwell).

dvhouw, the crash you recorded doesn't seems a fast ML issue. I guess you tried with scenes that worked before too. In case only that scene fails, please send us. You can try the render in other ways:

by command line: maxwell.exe -mxs:C:\your.scene.mxs -mxi:c:\output.mxi
launching maxwell render with opencl full disabled: maxwell.exe -opencl:off

If one of these ways fails too, we can discard fast ML issue ;)

Thanks for your reply Brany.
Maxwell crashes with every scene I've tried: from Studio, from Maya and also when I just launch the Maxwell Render stand alone without a scene.
So the program just won't open basiclly.
It seems like it's not related to the fast multilight preview, BUT the strange thing is that it started right after I was able to enable the the fast multilight preview (it always crashed when I tried to enable it). And when I disabled it and turned it on directly again, it crashed and since then I cannot start up Maxwell.

I'm trying launch maxwell by the command line, but unfortunately I'm a complete noob regarding to working this way with scripts.
When I'm in the windows command line I get a standard text: C:\Users\DVH>
My test scene is located at C:\Users\DVH\scenes\test-scene.mxs
So what should I type in exactly? Below is an images of what I tried. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
