Splitting apart the scene tree from the object panel?

In the new UI the scene tree and objects are combined into the same panel. Is there way to split these apart to separate panels? On that same note I don't really understand why those two panels are connected, they don't really seem related at all to me...in fact, it makes my preferred UI workflow much less efficient than in the old UI. Maybe i'm just not seeing the usefulness of this right now. :?

Maybe this helps, but you can drag up or down the part of the scene tree that holds the objects/instances/extension objects. So you can make the top part that holds the cameras a lot smaller, making the top part only a sort of "mini panel", so you have the rest of it dedicated to objects.
