We don't know how GPU will work in Maxwell yet! Maybe on OSX it will come later or something like that.
Maybe GPU first will be used only for preview mode not for the final rendering. Maybe you will be limited with some options (like SSS won't work yet on GPU). There are still a lots of open points to make any changes in hardware.
If you want to stay with MACs like me, let's wait first for Maxwell v4, Then maybe 10xx drivers will be released and if we are lucky all will work good! :)

If not and Maxwell GPU will rox. I go for WINDOWS :(

Good luck ;)
Right.

Obviously, the MacBook Pros for on the road work have to go out of the window to be replaced by Windows laptops (Nvidia issue).

But then, regarding PCs, what I don't understand is what happens if one's render nodes are ok with 16GB RAM (industrial design studio work not so heavy on scenes or whatever reason) and one then adds an 8GB VRAM GPU - will the rendering be accomplished jointly by CPU and GPU and memory also, or will one have to buy a GPU with 16GB VRAM or more (if such GPUs exist)? Or is all rendering done in the GPU so one can put just as well dusty old prehistoric CPUs into one's boxes?

One could, just as an example, buy an Evga 12G-P4-2990-KR nVidia GeForce GTX TITAN X for €1.400,00 for each render node PC - but then may be stopped out by the 12GB VRAM. More technically knowledgeable people may know if this is a wasted investment.

I suppose Next Limit will soon release information on how a render node PC for GPU rendering should be configured for the future.

Aniki wrote:OT, Eric, are you happy with your case? Which exact model is it then?

Thanks.

I am waiting for the updated Titan based on the 1080 chip, to have at least 24 Gb (single) Vram.. else I see all the GPU rendering solutions going down the drain..

I have a Phanteks Enthoo Primo and 3 Enthoo Pro cases. You should take a look at these cases. Man they are great. The Primo case is excellent.

i would really like to buy maxwell at this point switching from educational to commercial but it would be really nice to have a little bit more info, render times and such.
Especially since the price includes 5 render nodes? what this would mean? cpu and gpu render nodes are considered the same? would be weird.

I guess i'll wait a bit, hopefully some news would come out.

two question:

does the maxwell GPU for a single scene use all the vram of all the card present in the computer? if I have 2 card, each with 12 gb vram, does maxwell could use 24 gb vram for a single scene?

second: does make sense for a OSX user to upgrade a maxwell 4? i don't think cause OSX users could not have GPU renderer.... that's incredibile!!!

They said that it runs only on CUDA cards. So if you have a CUDA card on OSX then you are fine, if you use AMD it wont use the GPU.

WHAT IF:

... It is a hybrid system.

It uses what ever works with your hardware.

For OS X it would still use the CPU's
For Win X it could use both: You could chose which renderer you use, depending on your hardware.

That would be quite intriguing.

Cheers

more disturbing than intriguing.... that means for OSX users maxwell 4 have no news.... very bad!!!

I am using a GeForce GTX 970 4096 MB in an older MacPro.... hoping it will still provide some benefit although the memory is not great of course.

I am quite sure it will still use 12GB no matter how many of them u have in your system.

Like I mentioned in a post above, we Apple MacBook Pro and MacPro users have to kick out our Apple equipment and buy Windows 10 equipment that allows us to use Nvidia GPUs with as much VRAM as affordable - just like any other industrial designer using the other well-known high quality renderers that also rely on Nvidia's CUDA technology for their Maxwell Render beating speed.

The good thing is that those liking Maxwell Render can now speed up and are no longer left behind. But shame about all that Apple equipment, but then who cares if it's already been written off or mostly written off tax wise.

With all the respect, Im not even sure how people can be serious with 3d and rendering on an apple platform in 2016 but i guess to each his own.
Apple was good 10 years ago. Now its just an expensive gimmick.
I had a mac pro (grey big case model) and switched to windows, never looked back. The restriction and the amount of money arent justified anymore to me.

Thank you for your cogent comment, rich with suggestions regarding MR4 and which graphic cards to buy. Your wisdom is much appreciated!

3 pages of thread plus their facebook page isnt enough for you? It was answered multiple times, it works only on CUDA cards. so NO OPENCL cards.
You are welcome.

I mentioned before it's not quite game over for mac users. The maxwell version of the titan x works in the classic mac pro with the regular power supply. I also expect that the later pascal tech will work at some point. For the newer mac users i believe external solutions are available over thunderbolt. Or you might be able to build a GPU based rig to network render with.

There are often discussions in the mac pro hardware section in the macrumors website regarding GPU's it's a wealth of information.
