Refraction/Reflection Simulation in Maxwell?

Hi all

Recently im working on a project which requires me to simulate light reflection and refractions. for instance, a simulation of how light transmit into a series of prismatic wall, reflection/refractions tests of various curved glass lens. I've been told by one of the Arup lighting engineer that an open source lighting simulation program call Radiance could do the job. However, it is basically a scripting based UNIX program, the learning curve is too steep for me. I have been trying out the maxwell in Rhino, hardly to find the reasonable result. Theoratically, if Maxwell is a physics-based engine, should do the same as Radiance.. Any suggestions?? will be greatly appreicated!!

Please find the link of an example rendered in radiance

Simon, thanks for reply
Refer to the Desktop Riadiance version, it has been disencouraged to use as its very unstable and been stopped to develope since years ago (most of the radiance resource site says) so, in a way, does that mean radiance is the only way to accurately simulate light at the moment? Im urge to know!
cheers

I haven't used maxwell for that purpose but I know that it does bend light as it passes through curved (concave, convex surfaces).

However, it will take a while to render (you have to go all the way to sampling level 24 or higher)

There are some issues with the Maxwell spectrum colors (but they will be resolved)

Thomas

that was a awesome test!! which prgram did yo guys use to render in that post? and could you and Simon please post your detailed setting as well? like the light source, and maxwell settings, thanks a million!

BTW, cant find abbe setting in rhino :(

If you are refering to the liquid and glass test, it was all Rhino. If you look in that thread you can download the file.

If you are refering to the prism tests, then I don't know. Most likely it was Max.

The abbe number is in the dielectric materials dialogue. Once you are in there, select "custom" from the drop-down list and you will be able to adjust the abbe value.
