Many of the HDR-editors saves the edited files in Tiff (or other LDR -format). Is it possible to use a Tiff file as background image in the enviroment. It is not by deafault since only *.mxi, *.hdr and *.exr are accepted.

If not, How can I create a background from a Tiff file? Either .mxi or other format that will be accepted as environment image?

You can use MXCL to convert an image into an mxi. File>Load Image, adjust the intensity using the fstop and/or the intensity slider until it looks ok then File>Save MXI.
