If I use the Matte Material function and render a scene twice how do I combine the two renders into one final rendered image? Is this done in Maxwell or is this something done in Photoshop or Gimp? Thanks!

combine them in Photoshop or similar, make sure that you're also rendering out an alpha pass

Thanks Lebbeus: I think I will stick to this idea only for very special renders... looks like too much work. Rendering a scene 3 times to insert into a photograph (Render Scene, Render Alpha channel, and finally Render shadow pass), I would have to render a scene 5-6 times to achieve the effect that I thought was a good idea.

You can render all passes in one go. No need to render 3 times.
