Hi, I have been trying to figure out the displacement tool for Rhino but without success.
Could somebody help me with this problem because I do not find the solution in the manual?
Do you have to subdivide planes in Rhino or is the problem caused by something else? What would be the best way to solve this?
For example, I am trying to use a displacement map for a grassplane.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Joris,

I'm sure we can help, but you have not said what the problem is. :)

Hi, here are some images i'm testing.

First image: the corner of the stone wall is very unnatural, while the edges of the stones on the ground plane are floating.
Second image: same problem with edges and corners.

In general: I'm having the same problems with strange effects at corners and edges while adding displacement.
If anybody has some tips or tricks for using displacement, it would help me a lot.

Btw. If you use a texture map with displacement in Rhino, do you need to subdivide the planes (i.e. a grass plane, a large wall, a carpet,...) to get smoother / faster results? If so, how do you divide planes in Rhino?

hi joris,

just imagine, that maxwell displacement adds some geometry to your plane surface.

If your loose stones surface and the pavement surface is on tha same level, you get what you rendered. Maxwells adds a cerain height to your loose stones surface.

You can control this by either setting the offset value in the displacement material editor, or just lower your surface by some amount!

Hi Joris,

Pretty much what firebird said - when you put on a displacement, you're telling the engine to raise or lower those areas, so you can either lower the base plane or chamfer/radius the edge in such a way that it lines up more the way you want it to once it's displaced.

About subdividing things, you can select the object in Rhino, then go to Object Properties > Render Mesh Settings > check Custom Mesh > click Adjust. The dialog that comes up will allow you to control how the selected objects are meshed for rendering. The dialog also has a simpler form you can use by clicking the 'Simple Controls...' button, but this will give you less control. To decide how you should set up the mesh, I'd start by reading through this post: http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... hp?t=26194

Hope it helps,

Yeah, you could check the maxwell manual for the settings corresponding to the height of the displacement etc. I always have to check there, because it's not very self-explanatory. :(
I usually do the subdividing by creating a mesh for that object with a smaller tiling. (Custom mesh for that object)
