Back to circular brushing

Hi again everyone: I am sorry to be so slow to this but I have been giving it a shot. I had a similar problem before w.r.t circular brushing of stainless steel and I resolved it thanks to JD by selecting Spherical on the Texture mapping section in Rhino. The issue I am having now is with a different but very similar object in Rhino. No matter that I select Spherical mapping I still get the brush texture pointing into the centre of the circle not around the circle as I desire. I have tried Cylindrical projection as well as Capped Cylinder projections but they don't work either they just create a linear brush finish. I have tried flipping the normals but that doesn't affect the texture either. Any advice from you die hard folks!

With a single surface, besides flipping the UV's you can also swap the UV direction. This will change the mapping direction. Might just help

Here is a shot of my setup
Here is the result with the issue I am having. It sort of looks like it is trying to project spherically? But it definitely is not brushing in the direction of the outside of the circle on my design.
Any thoughts? Thanks again!!!

Is the center geometry convex ? and if so, .. is it just a trim from a larger sphere?
If this is the case ( or not), .. you'd be a lot better off if you created a new piece of geometry that was created by using revolve and then change the texture mapping to planar .........

Thanks for getting back to me! You have to go a bit slower for the boys in the corner

!! The centre geometry is planar but I want the brushing to be in a circular direction... with groove lines like an old vinyl record. I created the geometry by making a cylinder and then capping the ends . Does that make sense?

lol ..... No problem.
Actually you have to go slower, .. I just made a post that answered to that conclusion, ..but I thought I got it wrong -- and deleted. lol....
Anyway, ... your still going to be better off if you create a new piece of geometry that's created from a revolve.
This is a bad example, ..because I didn't tweak the map -- but illustrates the point. It's mapped spherically and can easily be mapped linearly by going back to planar.

I made another surface by revolving but now when I choose spherical I get what I originally got which is lines pointing into the centre of the circle.
Is there an easy way to change their direction? THANKS again!!!

Why don't you use a circular map? Use this one in the aniso slot of your material.

Together with this one in your angle slot you'll get a nice effect.
That should give you something like this.

in this case, if a revolved surface is used, you can stick with surface UV mapping and use _dir and _swapUV to correct the alignment of the texture along the differtent isocurve directions. but your texture needs to be seamless in one direction.

having applied the material with texture as " surface type mapping", using renderPreview mode we do:
1. select revolved (one closed degree) surface
2. type " _dir "
3. type " S + enter" (for SwapUV) + hit enter again (exit command)
4. observe
