I'm making a small theatre scene in SU 2015 with Fire plugin and a couple of HDRI lights, and would like to see the actual beams (as if it was travelling through fog or dust). Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, couldn't find it by search.

Here is a simple example scene using a group assigned a Spotlight material:

The basic idea is to enclose the area in a volumetric, which in this case is placed on a hidden layer (with Scene Manager > Output > Hidden Layers set to Render). I don't think you'll get such a dramatic result using an HDRI Emitter, as it is not so directional.
