I cant seem to change the material on a component in studio.....i can change the material on the stone groups though.
Not an advanced sketchup user and the model is not mine.
The objects in question are 'stone components'
What do i need to do within sketchup to remedy this ?

The green node named 'stone Components' is a container for SketchUp Components which reside on layer 'stone'. Ditto for 'stone Groups', except it contains SketchUp Groups. These nodes are for created for organizational purposes; they exist only in the MXS, and have no corresponding entity in the SketchUp document.
So the answer depends on whether you want to change the material of the contained Components or Groups in Studio, or in SketchUp. If in Studio, you would want to expand the node and assign materials to the meshes it contains.
To do it in SketchUp, you will need to familiarize yourself with the material precedence rules of SketchUp; basically, that materials assigned to more specific entities override materials assigned to less specific ones. So for a given Component, materials assigned to any Faces, Groups, or Components contained within that Component will override the material assigned to the Component.

Thanks JD for the answer
In the example below , I want to change the material in studio for all objects within stone component layer.
I have no problem changing the materials on the objects within stone groups.
The model I have is broken down by material but each material (stone, glass layer etc) has a sublayer like above , one is (.....)groups and the other is (....)components.
For each layer it is impossible to change the material on the (....)components layer.
Any help much appreciated

I would need to know what you mean by saying it is 'impossible' to assign the material. Say that you drag a material onto a mesh inside of the 'stone Components' node -- what happens? An error is shown? The material is assigned to the object, but nothing changes? Or, nothing happens at all?

sorry JD , yes , when I drag a material onto a mesh inside 'stone components' , it indicates a new material is applied but retains the original material (simple diffuse) from sketchup in fire or when rendered.

Does this mesh have any triangles which are not assigned to one of its triangle groups?

If you delete everything but one mesh and save the MXS, does the new MXS still show the same behavior? If so, could you send it to me (jeremy at nextlimit dotcom)?

It appears that you are not using the current version of the plugin, so please check that. On the actual issue, this MXS works just fine, so I'll just guess at a couple of possible reasons for the confusion. Firstly, there are indeed triangle groups on some of the objects, but not others, so it would be possible to run into some confusion there. Secondly, there are lots of instances involved; possibly, you are successful in assigning a material to your meshes, but are not even trying (you didn't mention that you were) to apply a material to your instances. For what it's worth, I checked them all here and am unable to find see any problem.
