Single sided SSS and the "regular" one are totally different approaches to creating an SSS effect, with the regular SSS being a true volumetric solution. For this reason we would need volumetric textures in order for it to be texturable, it just can't work with 2D textures. With a 2D texture it can only work at the surface level. If you still want to apply a texture onto the surface when using regular SSS, then adding it to the transmittance slot is the best way to go.
