Not sure if this is a Rhino or Max problem but when I place a shingle texture from the
materials gallery to the roof in the following example the surfaces seperate. Strange,
what am I doing wrong.

Is it a displacement material? If so, in which direction do the normals of your surfaces point? You can check that using Rhino's Dir command.

Yes it is a displacement material. Corrected normal direction on one surface, result the same
when rendered.
To get the direction matched on one surface I set Cplane to object applied planer mapping then
rotated the map 90 in the Z. Then the materials matched direction but renders as shown in JPG.
JD the displacement tab had height set at 2cm, when I set it to 0 it rendered correctly. The model scale is set to inches and the model is about a 10inche cube in size. Is no displacement
happening by setting disp. height to 0. And wondering what offset means in the displacement tab? Thanks

Yes, height=0 means no displacement. Offset is used to adjust for displacement maps whose zero-point is not black. Would it be possible for you to email me (jeremy at nextlimit dotcom) the Rhino, MXM, and texture files, so I can take a look?
