slow material assignment

I am experiencing slow material assignment response (10+ seconds).
The file is heavy with materials, probably on the order of 250, but I have cleared all meshes, saved small, clear maxwell cache etc.
Things are still very slow, textures are typically 5 in x 5 in, 150 dpi or smaller.
I also am struggling to organize said textures due to the lack of any folder/heirarchy in the material window.
I hope folders come in a future release or some mechanism to store and sort.
Any suggestion for organizing this many textures would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Rick

What are the states of Scene Manager > Options > Search Paths > Perform Path Checking, Search Depth, and Check File Version? How many different textures are used, on average, in each material?

Perform Path Checking - No
Search Depth - 1
Check File Version - No
Usually just 1 jpeg for texture, sometimes a mask too.
Thank you,
Rick

No apparent problems there. Next, could you let me know whether it makes any difference if you:
- are using drag-drop vs. right-click > Assign to Selected?
- are assigning to one object, or many?
- are assigning to NURBS, meshes, or block instances?
- have Maxwell Fire enabled or disabled?
Also:
- which version of Rhino are we talking about?
- are textures on the local disk, a network, or both?

1. Always use Assign to Selected since drag and drop is also slow to respond.
2. Assigning to one object (previous to making it a block).
3. Assigning to typical Rhino objects, usually nurbs.
4. Fire disabled.
a. Rhino 4 SR 9
b. textures stores locally on hard drive.
I will note that when things got extremely slow, I pasted everything into a new file, and things improved a bit, but have slowed down again.
Thank you.
Rick

Thanks -- what about saving and re-opening the file, does that also have an effect?

No, this does not seems to, nor does restarting the machine.
Thank you.

Thanks, those are about all the questions I can think of at this point. I'll let you know if I can find a definite reason for it.

It is confidential, but I could send you the file.

It might help. You can send it to jeremy at nextlimit dotcom, or if it's too large for that, I can provide you with an ftp address to upload to.
