Material assigned by layer-block not working for me

Hey guys, I am working with Step files inside Rhino that import as block instances. I have assigned materials to the objects by layer, however when I render they are still showing as clay. Can any of you guys drop me a line and let me know what I am missing. Thanks
Cary

The problem will be that though you are setting your block instances to use 'by-layer' assignment, this does not have any effect on the objects which are contained within the block definition. So you need to edit those objects by exploding the block, modifying the objects it contains, and then re-defining the block. I believe that V5 also has a 'BlockEdit' command which you should be able to use for editing the block definition directly.

About time. I wish the block-function could work more like "components" in sketchup, and be as intuitive to use as the groups in Illustrator - where you just double-click it and everything else turns grey,.

Thanks guys... I had exploded the block instance but think that there were more blocks assigned that I was not aware of.... had to explode multiple times to drill down to the polysurfaces. Thanks for the tips on V5

the blockedit works very nice (for embedded objects). although not as easy as in sketchup, but it really is a great help!

Cary:
I just stumbled upon this old thread, and there is a command in Rhino v5 called SuperExplodeBlock, perhaps you're aware of it?
