Instances, artifact, and install folder question

Hi Jeremy,

First time I notice this : Maxwell renders all the blocks in my file, regardless their hidden / shown status :

Also, I get a strange black artifact in the model of my structure.
I noticed that if I hide the membrane on top of it (remember the thin SSS material ?), then the artifact does not happen.

This brings back to my unanswered question : is thin SSS troubled by intersecting geometry ?
ie : must we take care not to cross any pair of leaves in our trees ?

Also : why does the 64 bit plug-in want to install in the X86 program folder in WIN 7 64 ?

Cheers,

Regarding the black artifacts, I checked the blocks that make-up the affected areas, and noticed they were surfaces and not polysurfaces as I wanted.
Joining the surfaces of those arched square sections make them render properly.
What I find strange is that :
-I shouldn't get this artefact even with surfaces
-The artefacts seem somehow linked to the presence of the membrane

1. rendering hidden blocks:

- got it, will be fixed

2. thin sss issue:

- not really a plugin thing, but if you send me a simple file, I'll try to check it out. I'd assume from your description (i.e. joined/unjoined behavior differences) that the calculation is sensitive to mismatched coincident mesh edges; just guessing now, but I'd be curious if you get a similar problem using a polysurface, for which the mesh settings have jagged seams == true; that would also allow edges of the meshes for each surface in the polysurface to be mismatched in a similar way.

3. plugin folder:

- not sure why it should matter, but it just installs there by default, and you are free to change it during installation. The two plugins (x86/x64) share some things between them, so the x86 Program Files folder is used in both cases.

Is it ok if I move these posts over into the 2.0.6 thread?

1) It doesn't happen all the time though...

2) I'll send you a file offline, but the Maxwell patch I installed (2.0.3) might have fixed it.

3) "Not sure why it should matter" hum... well, for the same reason I don't put my dirty socks in the fridge. :D
Shouldn't the X64 programs go in the folder that was meant for them ?

1) it should depend on how they're hidden: hidden layers are working, blocks hidden via Hide aren't

3) but -- do you have a separate drawers in your dresser for white socks and black ones? Really though, if you want the plugin in x64 Program Files, then please feel free to install it there; I don't see why it's an issue.

1) yes indeed

2) Mr. Balmer made 2 drawers, and I think it is impolite not to reward his effort
