JD-
For some reason I get the "old" style (MW 1.8x) material editor window when I use the Maxwell drop down menu above the command line...
when I click on an mxm I get the new style material editor. BTW...the 1.8x window is dead.
Question...is the only way to access preferences such as specifying where the mxm gallery downloads will locate on a download, only found in the material
editor "preferences" menu under the "file" heading?

Further elaboration... this is a bit confusing but maybe there is a reason for it...when double clicking on an mxm in database manager a new style material editor dialog box opens...when clicking on an mxm in scene manager an old style material editor dialog box opens.

What you are referring to as 'new' is mxed.exe - what you are referring to as 'old' is the plugin's material editor. The database manager shows mxm files on your disk, so double-clicking on them opens them up in mxed.exe; conversely, the plugin's material editor edits materials which are not on your disk, but only in memory in the current Rhino document.
Now, as far as 'dead', I am not sure what you mean; can you edit materials in the scene (i.e. in Scene Manager > Materials) with the plugin's material editor? Or, are you saying you can get them to show up in it (by clicking them in Scene Manager > Materials), but that the user-interface is somehow dead? If so, what OS are you running on?

Simple reason for the plugin material editor reported as being dead...no materials in scene! Once a material is in the scene it works. I understand the distinction
between scene material editor and opening the mxed.exe -- it's actually more clear...getting used to a slightly different interface
Now, if I can only figure out why I can't download from the gallery in rhino.
