trying to get an emitter working, but what ever i crank up nothing is happening. Do the materials in the scene need to be Maxwell materials to respond to the emitter ?

No, their materials will be converted to Maxwell ones in a more or less good way depending on what the original material was. I'd just suggest to simplify the scene and see what happens, check the camera settings, check that this surface is not set to be hidden etc....
