Materials are not being read when I open existing files?

I noticed this in the release notes;

re-added support for the legacy material, but its UI only contains a "convert to layered" button

Sounds related, although I dont know what is meant by 'legacy material'.

I'm using 3.05 btw.

You shouldn't use 3.0.5, its embedded materials are pretty broken (see here). The release notes are totally wrong too -- the part you quoted looks like it is from a different plugin (i.e. not Cinema) altogether. I'll have to talk to the web people and see what's happening there.
