Is any texture set as the "Active Texture" in the material? There is a drop-down just below the material preview image, both in MXED and in the plugin's material editor, where you may choose which texture (since a material may have many) to show in the viewport.

I was pulling my hair off on this one!

Is there a way to increase the viewport texture display resolution? Because in C4D general settings when I increase from 128 to 2048 it doesn't change anything :(

Viewport resolution is controlled in the texture editor, on a per-texture basis. The value in Preferences sets the resolution for newly-created textures, but does not affect already-existing ones.
