Is this already supported in the latest plugin? A scene/tutorial on the workflow would be handy.

Cheers

I can't find any mention of Maxwell volumetrics of any kind supported in Maya, although I've spent a fair amount of time looking.

Hi Aniki,

There is currently an issue with the volumetric extension that prevents exporting maya fluids, but they will be supported in a future version.
Volumetric objects are otherwise supported in the latest v3 maya plugin via the volumetric object (the small cloud icon in the maxwell toolbar) which has three rendering modes:
- Particle based: The extension takes the particle data from the supplied particle file and renders it as a volumetric object
- Constant: The extension renders a constant density cloud within the bounding box in the viewport
- Noise 3D: Essentially like the constant mode, but instead of rendering constant density it gets the density from a noise function

There is also a volumetric modifier node (the small cloud with an M on it) which can be added to particle nodes so they get rendered as a volumetric object instead of spheres.

Regards,
Radu

Thanks for clarifying, Radu.

I was wondering if the fluids will be rendered with the respective color and density channel taken into account in the volumetrics.
Are there any plans to introduce a specific maxwell shader to setup volumetrics vased on the channels/date in openvdb/field3d as well?
Using a plain maxwell material is limiting this currently, right?

Thanks.

I was meaning I couldn't find it in the documentation:

Did I miss it?

Hi Aniki,

Maya fluids are exported by the plugin, however the current version of the volumetric extension has a bug that crashes Maxwell when fields pass a certain number of voxels. The bug will be fixed in the next version of Maxwell.

There is also an issue in the current Maya plugin that made the fluid density export in the 0..1 range which is most likely why you can't see the rendered fluid if you haven't experienced the crash I mentioned earlier. This will also be fixed in the next version of the plugin.

Radu

Thanks Radu!

Im curious to see rendered fluids soon, also how the color is passed to maxwell etc.

new maxwell beta 3.0.0.4 uploaded TODAY and mentions some volumetric bug fixes... (this beta download experience is Awesome thanks Nextlimit!!) so I'm guessing a new mayaplugin beta will not be far away.
I'm guessing we can(or soon) texture volumetric object with gradient ramp to control opacity?

a step by step on how to do this for us would be great!

Now I see documentation that shows Maya fluids being rendered in Maxwell but I still can't figure out how to do it.

Maya Fluids

The plugin can export voxel data from maya fluids. Maya fluids have a default material which cannot be translated into a Maxwell approximation. It is recommended to assign a Maxwell material by right clicking the fluid in the viewport and selecting Assign New Material.
