Maya is waiting for batch renders to finish and the Render Settings window is sitting above all apps. I've seen this when sending things to external apps without specifying it as a background process ( & in OS X/Linux). Is this what's happening?

I can't reproduce this. When you select start batch render from the "render" menu, a separate process should start and Maya should continue working as before. What is happening exactly on your machine, does Maya become completely unresponsive until the batch render stops? Does it work differently when you use Maya Software?
