I have an elaborate Maxwell model with a fair number of shaders.

Maya works fine as long as I never leave wireframe, but the secong I hit the '6' key it hangs and crashes.

So far the solution is not to hit '6,' only '5'

Do you have lots of legacy (1.x) materials in the scene? What video card do you have? Do you have the latest drivers for it? What's Maya's CPU usage when it appears hanged?

I use Bare Metal 01, 02 and 03 which I downloaded from the library.

They are layers merged into layered materials. The other layers are sometimes wizard metals, and sometimes just settings I make by hand.

I'll have to check on the other questions.

I have only layered materials, using Mac OS X 10.6.3, Maya 2010, 2011 on 2x2.66 GHz Quad-Core Xeon Mac Pro with 8 Gb RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. And I do experience '6' crashes on a complex scene.

I mentioned in another thread, but just to add it here:

I stopped getting the '6' crashes on Maya 2010 when I moved to a PC where Maya has 64-bit architecture and can use all the RAM.
