I often want to resume a render mxi file but forgot that it was executed from Maya so the file in /tmp is no longer accessible. Is there an environment variable or something that can be changed to write this to the scenes or data directory?

Not at the moment, but we can add this feature.

weird.. cuz my mxi files that i render are stored in the base folder of my maya project.. ie: c:\3d\project\render.mxi
and all i do to resume them later is double click on the mxi and its all good.. (i must have it set somewhere to save to my projects folder)... I also always use the COMMON tab in maya render globals to rename each render (file name prefix under file output settings in common tab not maxwel tab) to give each render a specific name so that the mxi's dont overwrite each other

the mxi file is stored fine in my project dir - it's the mxs source scene that is created in /tmp
