How to select point cloud objects.

Is it just me or is quite hard to find a pickable point in a point cloud object (proxies or referenced mxs) in 3dsmax? Is there something that can be done to improve that on coder or user part?

I have found that to be tricky too. Usually I have luck picking on an outer point or at the pivot.

The pickable point should be the bounding box of the pointcloud. It's that your case for you guys? We sure can improve that part if it's the case.

I tryed changing the way vertex are displayed in preferences but proxies and references don't seem to be affected by that. I usually don't see the bounding box you mention unless I choose "display as box" and it's as selectable as the point cloud (cannot pick the box). I usually find one invisible and pickable point somewhere near the center of the cloud. Sometimes after loading the scene including the referenced mxs's a bounding box appears depending on the viewing distance, but cannot find a consistent rule.

I just tested both Proxies and MXS Refs. What I did:

1. Created a proxy object from a teapot. I was able to select the proxy using its bounding box.
2. Saved the scene and reload it.
3. Couldn't select the proxy by bounding box anymore. Will fix it for the next update.

I did all 3 steps with a MXS Ref and everything was fine.

Could you give it a try and confirm that is this your case with those 2 type of objects?

With proxies:
1. Created a proxy object from a teapot. I don't see the bounding box (unless when selected) but the proxy is easily pickable in the bounding box area.
2. Saved the scene and reload it.
3. Can't select the same way as before; only a point near the center of the object is selectable.

With MXS ref:
1. Created a MXS ref from a teapot. Insert the MXS ref. I don't see the bounding box (unless when selected) but the cloud is easily pickable in the bounding box area.
2. Saved the scene and reload it.
3. It works as in point 1.

OK, so the problem is with 3th step in proxy usage: it can't be picked up after reloading the scene.

I have to say too that in the scene I'm working now, which is more complex than the teapot I cannot select the MXS refs correctly, just a point near the center.

I see. I'll investigate both objects then.

I'm sending you a simple problematic scene.
