How do you do realistic grass

The current wave for grass is to create some real geometry and scatter it about. Most of the tutorials I've seen are, of course, geared towards vray or mental ray and involve methods of scattering that either don't work for maxwell or don't work as well.
What do you guys use for this sort of thing? I'm wanting to scatter about 3 types of grass and 2 or 3 types of flowers. It's a fairly large area so I'm hoping for something less manual than adv. painter.
I've never used maxwell proxies so I'm not sure if part of the solution lies there perhaps.

That one is pretty cool.. no..? I mean you can always add more maps.. so more variations you get..

It is a nice method. I don't see it used as much as I would expect. I don't think it would work as well for what I'm doing though. I also wonder how well it would work with variations.

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I'm looking to try. Of course now, we've got thinSSS which should certainly help. Still not sure on the best way to scatter the geometry around though. Did you ever scatter that patch to create a larger lawn area?
